I recently read a bit of welcome news–that ubiquitous as McDonald’s fast food places are, libraries still outnumber them in American towns. I agree with Borges – to me Heaven could be a huge free library, only with a bakery and coffee shop attached, and of course, it will allow pets. My parents, both readers, took us to libraries a lot, and of course I loved school libraries and librarians. Been addicted to libraries ever since. I’ve been in some spectacular ones (including Harvard’s Widener) but have a particular affection for smaller ones in modest towns, too. (I have a Kindle and can appreciate its advantages, especially for travel, but real books are irreplaceable and wonderful.) In Westbrook, where I live, the library is an integral part of the community, as it should be, and the librarians are all friendly, creative and knowledgeable. My mother was a librarian for a few years, and I’ve always thought it would have been an excellent alternate career path for me – an English major, teacher, book publisher and editor. Here’s to all the libraries and librarians everywhere!
